Here's the memoirs documenting my journey through dog ownership. It's definitely not for everyone - heck, I don't even know if it's for me, but I'll take you through the ride and it's trials and tribulations. Meet me... and my Hero.

Shih Tzu + Poodle = Shih-Poo

I'm a busy gal and I live in a small condo apartment with no balcony, so I have special needs when it comes to a dog. Of course while he's a puppy I understand that I will have to put in a lot more time to get him up to speed with his new life, his home and most importantly, his new mommy (me, duh!).

After Patch, the nightmare Cockapoo that was my family dog, I was permanently scared away from anything to do with any of the breeds where he was conceived... until I did some research and found that a poodle cross is the way to go - they commonly refer to these mixes as "Designer Dogs." Firstly, poodles have hair and not fur so they don't shed and they are usually hypo-allergenic which is great. Next, mixed dogs tend to have fewer genetic defects when they are crossed compared to pure breeds. Finally, I always wanted a mixed child and hey, just in case it doesn't happen for me, here's a guarantee I'll get one. hahaha... bad again, I know, but how cool does it sound to say I have a Designer Dog? Just kidding - I won't Paris Hilton my dog.

So given my situation, research says that I should have a smallish dog that requires little exercise outdoors and is not too needy for attention... unfortunately, there aren't many smallish dogs that require little attention because they're all attention whores! Attention whores I tell you! I can't give up the cuteness factor and I can't compromise on the size with my limited space limitations, so I've had to make my decision on the breed based on the characteristics that I want in my pooch. Alas, I've settled on a Shih-Poo, which as the title of this blog cleverly says is a cross between a Poodle and a Shih Tzu.

Here are some of the characteristics of Shih-Poos...

A first generation Shih-Poo is a mix of a Purebred Toy Poodle with a Purebred Shih-Tzu resulting in a non shedding and non allergenic mix. This breed will grow to be about 10-15 lbs and because of the Shih-Poo's smaller size, they are great condo/apartment companions. The Shih-Poo typically has a soft, cuddly coat that is easy to groom, a long tail, a button nose and comes in a variety of colors such as black, white, blonde, tri-colored, fawn with a black mask, red, chocolate and others.

Shih-Poos are excellent family pets as they are wonderful with people of all ages. They make an excellent lap dog and like to travel. Not requiring a lot of exercise, this breed can fit comfortably into any life style.

The Shih-Poo's temperament is very loving and laid back like the Shih-Tzu. They rarely bark, are never aggressive, love to cuddle, are generally easy to train, and have a very patient disposition.

Alas, the choice for a Shih-Poo was obvious for me! Can't wait to choose one... I'm leaning towards a dog that is all one colour as I'm not that into the multi-coloured ones as much. We'll see though... you never know which one you'll fall in love with. =)

Two weeks ago,in a whirlwind adoption, I was given a sweet 2-year-old Shih-Poo from a friend who was moving into a place where she couldn't take Muffy. (Yeah, I know... "MUFFY?!?!?"" What can I say?) She is absolutely adorable. She told me in confidence that her full name is actually Ms Molly Muffin, and that she wouldn't mind if we call her Molly from now on, so Molly she is.
Anyway, twice when I was reading your blog entry, Joanna, I came across the word "Alas," at the beginning of a sentence, so I braced myself for some Bad News. After reading the rest of the sentence, I decided you meant "At last," which is quite different in meaning. You might want to consider editing those instances, before someone less hardy than I comes along, starts to read your blog, and collapses with a case of the vapours.
Can't wait to see more on Hero and the other furry friends he is sure to make.

My family just adopted a little Shih Poo who had been badly neglected. He is 10 pounds, but should be 11 or so, and was covered in putrid-smelling mats. When we brought him home, he was growly and snappy about touching specific spots, and as we trimmed away the mats, we uncovered an abscessed toe, a slit ear-tip, fleas, cheatgrass. . . no wonder he was unhappy!

That said, from day one our response to aggression from him has been to let him know in no uncertain terms that it won't be tolerated, just as we would with a large dog.

If he growls or snaps, we *gently* and firmly take hold of his bottom jaw (key word, gently, we're not out to hurt him). When he relaxes, usually with a big sigh, we let go and go right back to the grooming. Sometimes this takes some repetition, but we always end the grooming on our terms, when he is not growling. This is all about finesse, and about showing him that we are his helpful leaders who will not be intimidated.

He's learning very quickly to trust us to care for him, and already has stopped snapping at us when we reach for his ears.

A note on "alas" vs. "at last": when my third child was born, I delegated the job of sending out the immediate e-mail to a work friend (who has a PhD, by the way). He wrote "Alas! The baby has come!"

Common, super funny mistake!

3 years ago after losing our beloved Maltese Terrier Sherloch, my family needed another dog desperately. We came across our litle dog at a shelter and adopted him without any hesitation (our four legged girl Jordyn loved him from the time she met him which was very important to us). He has turned out to be the best dog anyone could ever ask for. He loves to play, enjoys going in the car for rides, loves kids and walking is a must for him. We named him Whatson in memory of Sherloch. He is now about 7years old. He has had issues with his back but a dog chiropractor fixed him and is as good as gold. Anyone thinking of getting one, please don't hold back as it will be one of the best things you do in your lifetime.

1 year after losing our beloved golden retriever, my mom and I needed a new dog pretty badly. My mom had befriended a mouse in the garbage shed, if that tells you anything. Anyway, my dad wanted a small air travel-friendly dog who was relatively easy to train...the shelter recommended a 5 year old shih poo they had up for adoption, and a week later we brought him home. Having never had a small dog I was very skeptical, but this is a wonderful animal and I fell in love with him almost instantly. He's cuddly, playful (LOVES to fetch, goes berzerk over a new toy without fail), loves to sleep on your lap, is attentive, extremely smart, friendly and patient with strangers, and just perfect. I look forward to seeing him so much when I visit my parents...they have commented that my visits have become much more frequent since they got him :). While he doesnt require a ton of activity like my retriever did, he gets incredibly excited for long walks so i treat him to them as often as i can. Every time i pick up his leash he wags and whines and begs, so I can't say no. Most dogs require some outdoor time most days of the week, just to explore and burn off a little energy. So overall...this is the best dog ever. Playful, friendly, energetic, cuddly, intelligent, adorable, the whole neighborhood loves him.
